Garage Millionaires: Famous Companies That Started Out in a Garage (Part Two)

Garage companies

If you cast your mind back to July, you might remember that we wrote a post that looked at famous companies that made their big start from the humble surroundings of their garage.

We looked at how the CEO of Amazon started an online bookstore from his garage, how Steve Jobs made his start building computers within a tiny garage in California, and how Google was put together in a rented garage in San Francisco.

These weren’t the only famous companies that started out in a garage; there were actually a lot, lot more.

Disney

The Walt Disney Company was another huge company that started out in a garage, one that was located within a 45 minute drive from the Disneyland Park that now operates in Anaheim, California. The garage in question belonged to Robert Disney – Walt’s uncle. It all started in the summer of 1923, when Walt and his brother Roy set up “The Disney Brothers Studio.” The brothers started filming “The Alice Comedies” which went on to form part of the original Alice in Wonderland.

Hewlett – Packard

Located in a 12×18 foot garage at the back of a house they rented, graduates Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard launched their company Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP). The garage was just 10 miles away from the garage that Google was masterminded in – maybe there was something in the water? Starting off with just a $538 investment, the two guys built their own audio oscillator. One their first customers were the Walt brothers, who bought 8 of the products from them! The two men stayed in the garage for a whole year, before moving somewhere bigger in 1934. The garage is now a private museum.

Yankee Candle Company

The Yankee Candle Company is probably the largest and most successful manufacturer of scented candles in the whole of the USA. Did you know that it was started by a 16 year old boy in his parent’s garage? In 1969, 16 year old Michael Kittredge decided to make a present for his mother. He designed her a scented candle using melted crayons. The neighbours were interested in his candle and offered to buy them from him, which lead him to mass producing the candles. Just 4 years later, his business had grown so large, he had to move out of the garage and into a huge mill!
