Garage Millionaires: Famous Companies That Started Out in a Garage (Part One)

Companies that started in a garage

Garages are often used for storing cars, or other items that people want to store away from the house. In fact, these days, people are more likely to use their garages for storage than for housing their cars. They’re a great place for keeping your possessions safe and out of the way.

Did you also know that they are a great place to start a company? A handful of super rich and famous companies made a humble start in garages. Can you guess who?

Amazon

Amazon was initially founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos. He started an online bookstore that was run out of his home garage in Washington, USA. During this time, he also started to develop software. He knew that he couldn’t run meetings from his garage, so he conducted them in a nearby Barnes & Noble – the place where most of Amazons early negotiations took place. After selling his first online book in 1995, Bezos went on to issue his IPO. Amazon is now a multibillion company, and the largest online retailer in the world.

Apple

Our favourite valuable technology company started off in a small garage in California, where some of Apple’s first ever computers were built. In 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started Apple Computers by selling around 50 units of the computers that Wozniak had built, to local retailers – they had produced the computers in less than 30 days. This garage is now referred to as being a historic property.

Google

Sergey Brin and Larry Page decided that they wanted to start a company together back in the mid 1990’s. Two years after meeting each other, they set up Google’s headquarters in Susan Wojcicki’s 2,000 foot Menlo Park garage. She rented it to the guys for 1,700 a month, so that she could keep up with her mortgage repayments. It only took a year for the company to outgrow the garage, and they soon moved to a bigger office.

These are just a few of the famous companies who made their start in garages, keep checking back as we will be revealing even more!
